What are washers?

What are washers used for?
There are many types of washers. Each has its own usage and advantages.

What are fender washers?
It is known by various names like plain washer, flat washer or normal washer. These washers are very similar to standard washers with a minute difference in shape. The difference is that the outer diameter is very large as compared to the inner diameter. The fender washers are placed under the head of the nut. Its large diameter helps in distributing the load when used for thin surfaces. It also distributes amount of force applied while tightening the screw. They come in variety of plastic and metallic materials (carbon steel, stainless steel, wrought iron). They also come in huge variety of sizes (from very small size of 3/16” to ½”).
